Mission statement

MoDyna helps you to understand complex dynamic systems.

Many systems that surround us show a complex, counter-intuitive behaviour. This complex behaviour result from the various interactions and feedback loops within such a system. Although each of these interactions might be easy to understand, we are often unable to predict / preceive the behaviour of the system as a whole. Let me give you some examples:

  • Some eco-system show a sudden breakdown. What is the reason for such an abrupt change, when the cause that destroys the system develop only slowly and steadily?
  • There is a tendency of some supply chains to show oscillations in the inventory stock. What to do about this? What will happen if the delivery time in a given step is shortened?

In many cases we are not able to predict the behaviour of these systems. Due to feedback-loops and non-linear effects many systems show a counter-intuitive and surprising behaviour. Without a deep understanding it is hard to correctly influence / steer a complex, non-linear system in the desired way.

We need a tool that simulates a systems behaviour. Such a tool would enable us to explore a system by modeling it. With such a tool we could answer questions like the following:

  • Is that feedback-loop important for the system? - Just simulate the system without this feedback loop.
  • What changes in the paramterisation lead to a qualitatively different behaviour of the system? - Just change the parametrisation and rerun the simulation.

MoDyna helps you to understand complex dynamic systems. Using MoDyna you can graphically model a dynamic system. The software simulates the behaviour of your model and returns graphs that show the changes within the system over time.

You can easily modify the model's structure, its initial conditions and paramters to analyse the behaviour under various circumstances. This enables you to get a much better insight and understanding of a systems dynamic behaviour.

You do not need any knowledge about differential equations or numerics about how to integrate a set of differential equations. MoDyna hides these details from you and cares for the mathematics behind the scenes. You can concentrate on graphically model the system that interests you and study its behaviour. MoDyna is easy to use. You can model a system by "drag and drop". Just click a button to start the simulation and study the graphs representing the behaviour of the system.

MoDyna is open source. You can use and distribute the program for free under the terms of the GPL. The programs code is open to the public.
